Scotland's Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) will be stopping the act of rehoming pets over the festive period within its 10 national rescue and rehoming centres.
The Scottish animal welfare and rehoming charity are hoping to avoid the repercussions of taking a pet home as a gift.
This follows concerns over a rise in the number of calls being made to re-home dogs after the festive period in 2018.
Animal rescue and rehoming superintendent, Sharon Comrie said: “Each year we care for unwanted animals that were given as gifts and the novelty has worn off.
People should consider the commitment they are making when taking on any animal.
Animals need attention, care and love which is a life-long obligation."
From December 19 to January 3 it will be impossible to re-home a young animal from the Scottish SPCA.
Comrie said: "We would like to ensure everyone, animals included, have a wonderful Christmas.
But, we want to ensure this happy ending extends to the rest of the animal’s life, not just the weeks after.”
All of the organisation's centres will still be open during the festive period with the exception Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Day and January 2.
